A group of friends from The Netherlands who have been hard at work restoring a Nashorn Sd.Kfz. 164 since early 2016 were left devastated when the vehicle was badly damaged in a recent fire. Damage caused to the tracked vehicle is estimated to be about €200,000.
The 15-member group, who are supported by their wives, partners and children, have now launched a crowdfunding appeal to raise funds to get the project back on track. In a statement on social media the group said: “We are very happy to read about how many people want to contribute and were hesitant about crowdfunding for donations for several reasons. First, we do not want to seem greedy. The tragedy which occurred is a major setback and had us struggling to carry on. But our biggest struggle was emotional and not financial. Secondly, we are a group of friends who have a passion in restoring vehicles. For the last 25 years we have been bringing World War Two vehicles back to life and making them available again in museums all over the world for the people who love them. It’s important that you guys know it is not our intent to keep the Nashorn for ourselves for a long period. We intend – as we have done with our other vehicles – to restore it to its former glory and move on to another project.”
The cause of the fire was still being investigated at the time of writing, although it has been established that it didn’t start in the vehicle.
